What Increases Your Risk
You are more likely to develop acute renal failure if you have certain conditions or diseases, especially if you are an older adult. Conditions that increase your risk include:
- Existing kidney disease or liver disease such as nephrotic syndrome or cirrhosis.
- Diabetes.
- Heart failure.
- High blood pressure.
- Obesity.
Acute renal failure usually occurs in people who are already seriously ill and are in the hospital or intensive care. People who have heart or abdominal surgery or bone marrow transplant have a higher risk.

Creatinine is a waste product from the normal breakdown of muscle tissue. As creatinine is produced, it's filtered through the kidneys and excreted in urine. Doctors measure the blood creatinine level as a test of kidney function. The kidneys' ability to handle creatinine is called the creatinine clearance rate, which helps to estimate the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) -- the rate of blood flow through the kidneys.
