Clinical Trials: 10 Questions to Ask
Before joining a clinical trial, you should feel comfortable and fully informed. The National Library of Medicine suggests a series of questions to ask before you enroll in a clinical trial, which we've adapted below. You should know the answers to all of these questions before you enroll.
It's difficult to remember the answers to all these questions. You may want to print out this page, and bring a friend or relative along to take notes when you meet with study researchers. Or bring along a recording device so you can review your questions and the answers privately afterward.
- What are researchers trying to learn in this study?
- What do researchers already know about the different experimental interventions in this study? Have they been tested before? Are they already being used?
- What interventions and tests will I get during this study?
- Who will be in charge of my care during the study?
- What are the differences between what I would get in this study and my current care? Are there different side effects? What are the risks and benefits?
- How will this trial affect my daily life?
- How long will this trial last?
- Who will pay for the various parts of the study? Will I be paid for my expenses?
- Who will pay for my medical care if I am injured during the study?
- How will I know if the trial was successful? Will I get the results?
