Everyone knows exercise is good for your health. But how do you know if you're getting the most out of your workout? An easy way to find out is by knowing your target heart rate. A normal resting heart rate is usually between 60 and 100 beats per minute. For healthy people, your target heart rate is where your heart and lungs will get the biggest advantage during an aerobic workout. For moderate to vigorous exercise, your target heart rate should be between 50% and 85% of your maximum heart rate.

To find your max heart rate, subtract your age from 220. Keeping track of your heart rate while you work out can also help make sure you're exercising safely. If your heart rate goes above your target range, you might be pushing yourself too hard and need to slow down.

Before you start a new fitness plan, talk to your doctor, especially if you have any medical issues, including heart problems or high blood pressure. To find your target heart rate, you can do the math or use an online calculator. Then take your pulse during your workout to track your heart rate, or you may have a digital fitness tracker that does it for you. So get moving and get in your zone.
