Lynn to volunteers :

We'll get you all off to your assignments for the day.

Narrator:

These young hospital volunteers are part of a long-standing tradition – the candy striper.

Lynn Shearer:

We started with our candy striper program back in the '60's here at Geisinger and it was mostly female.

Narrator:

Today, you may see a few young men in the program and they prefer to be called junior volunteers. But no matter the job title, the job description is still the same.

Lynn Shearer:

They provide the gentle touch, the warm greeting, the hello, do you need some help finding your way?

Narrator:

Candy stripers have a number of assignments, including delivering mail - helping out in the hospital's gift shop - and transporting blood.

Blood bank personnel:

Thank you. Have a nice day.

Ashita Mittal:

I walk around a lot and my day usually begins at 9 and it ends at around 3:30, so by the end of the day, I'm just so tired, but it's a great workout sometimes.

Narrator:

17-year-old Ashita Mittal (Ah-SHEE-tah Mah-TALL) says her gig as a candy striper is part of a bigger plan.

Patient to Ashita:

Thank you.

Ashita Mittal:

I figured that if one day I want to go to medschool, I should figure out right now whether or not I like hospitals and whether or not I like being around people.

Lynn Shearer:

It's more about learning now than it was 10, 15 years ago.

Narrator:

Qualifications to be a candy striper differ from hospital to hospital. And it is volunteer work, so there's no paycheck. Still, Ashita (Ah-SHEE-tah) says it's worth it.

Ashita Mittal:

I'm being paid by seeing what a hospital does and how it runs and that's, that's enough for, that's a great payment for me.

Narrator:
