Let me put it this way, my nose bleeds were controlling my life.
Merwin case used to spend a lot of time hunched over a sink, waiting for his nose bleeds to stop.
I had to be very careful where I went, when I went, because I never knew when it was gonna bleed.
When the bleeding didn't stop, he checked with a doctor who diagnosed him with a vascular condition called HHT.
Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.
HHT causes hundreds of unhealthy blood vessels to grow inside the nose. When their weak walls break, patients have sudden, massive bleeding.
Many of them are on regular blood transfusions, 50 or 100 transfusions a year. And then ultimately, uncontrolled, they will generally die from their nose bleeds.
There's no cure, but now there's hope. In a study at the University of California San Diego, Doctor Terence Davidson has been able to stop nose bleeds with the cancer-fighting drug Avastin.
It's night and day in terms of I now have something to offer these people.
Avastin inhibits new blood vessel growth. Doctors can inject it into the nose during an emergency room visit. Once the condition is controlled, there's a spray.
So, one spray goes on this side.
For Merwin, it made all the difference. For now, he no longer has to make sure there's a sink nearby.
I always carry napkins with me just in case.
Just a little added insurance to help him breathe a little easier. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
