Dean Waggoner has multiple sclerosis and wants to do more than his power wheelchair will allow. So the retired construction worker decided to take the iBOT out for a test drive.
If I could have had one of these which allows you to go over 5 inch curbs and climb up and down steps and doesn't get stuck in sand and gravel, it would have allowed me to work at least another year.
Unlike your grandfather's wheelchair, the iBOT has a sophisticated system of computers and gyroscopes. Potential users have to be able to maneuver a joystick and understand features on the control panel.
If one thing gets out of balance, it beeps at them, gives them a command on the screen and they have to go through certain prompts to see what it was that happened. And that's part of the 6 hour training.
Another part is going up and down steps. If you want to do it on your own, it requires upper body strength.
If they don't have that, but they have a caregiver, it does have a stair climb assist feature. So they could have a caregiver assist them with the handle on the back.
Maneuvering the iBOT takes practice. But dean says it's like learning to ride a bike.
It's just a matter of getting used to it. Once you get used to it, it's very, very easy. It's almost second nature.
Matthew Seals agrees. He's working on his favorite feature, the one that gives him a real lift.
It lifts you up so that you're eye level with the average person, allows you to reach cabinets, that type thing.
If the iBOT's a good fit, it's custom-programmed to your center of gravity. It runs about 26 thousand dollars, but users say the freedom it provides is priceless. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
