Gloria Wahl (wall) runs marathons, but training can be scary. She can’t always hear the oncoming traffic.
(traffic)
Surgery left her deaf in one ear.
When I am running on the streets, I don’t know where if a car is coming in my deaf side because I don’t know if I am not wearing the device.
The device she’s talking about is called SoundBite. It’s an experimental, non-surgical system that transmits sound through her teeth.
We’re studying a group of patients that are deaf in one ear, uh, which means when sound comes into the bad ear, uh, it can’t be heard and It has to travel to the other side of the head and there’s a sound shadow where a lot of the sound won’t make it to the other ear or be quite quiet when it actually arrives to the good ear.
The SoundBite hearing system uses a small behind-the-ear microphone to grab the sound, and a custom-made retainer-like device to conduct the sound through the bone.
The eardrum and the ear bones their job is to take sound vibrations from the air and then put them into the fluid of the inner ear. Well, if we vibrate the bone directly or in this case the tooth which is connected to the bone, the sound vibrations don’t have any trouble getting into the fluid of the ear.
Gloria was one of the first 30 patients to test the device, and is now enrolled in a long range study.
This is an amazing device. Uh it gives you more confidence. It improved my life.
Doctor Murray estimates SoundBite will cost about the same as a traditional hearing aid, and also expects it to be covered by insurance. For WebMD, I’m Damon Meharg
