Eight-year-old Owen is a bright, energetic boy who had been showing signs of ADHD. Although he was doing well in school, his mother knew he could do better.
When I came and visited the classroom, I felt like that wasn't the best of what he had to offer.
Doctor Theresa Cerulli (seh-ROO-lee) used a clinical interview - comprehensive questioning - to rule out other reasons for his symptoms. It's the gold standard for diagnosing ADHD, but often families want more.
To them the clinical interview seems like, well like we're just talking, how do you make a diagnosis from talking?
The new computerized, quotient test can objectively measure the core symptoms of ADHD.
When we see the five pointed star, we're going to hit the space bar.
Owen had to pay attention and control impulses while an infrared camera recorded subtle body movements.
I don't use a cookbook approach, you know, here get your quotient test and, you know, if you have ADHD or you don't. It's an additional tool that allows me to look at where this person falls on a spectrum of inattention, impulsivity.
As soon as the test was over, the doctor got the results from the quotient website and printed out a report for the patient.
Any one of us could look like we have ADHD on a given day, so a lot of times by the time people have finally made the appointment, they really want answers.
It was a huge relief actually, because you can see it on the paper and you can say, Okay, yes, I do see that.
With treatment, Owen Rose to the top of his class.
I finally feel like he is where he should be.
And planning to stay there. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
