Will Smoking Pot Help My ADHD?
Smoking marijuana may make you feel calmer, but in fact it can worsen ADHD symptoms.
Question:
I have been diagnosed with ADHD. I have been prescribed Adderall, which helps somewhat, but I find marijuana works much better. Now I don't take my Adderall at all, I just smoke to control my ADHD behavior. Is this normal? Have you heard of any patients doing this? What could be a better solution?
Answer:
Marijuana is often the drug of first choice for young people with ADHD because they feel calm, sometimes energized, and euphoric. However, marijuana can also decrease concentration, decrease motivation, and cloud thinking. Feeling relaxed and high decreases the ability to accurately assess how one is functioning. Marijuana does not treat ADHD, but increases its symptoms. People who enjoy pot smoking might try medications for ADHD, but generally prefer how they feel on pot and won't stick with treatment. If you really want help, you should work with someone who is an expert in treating ADHD on a comprehensive treatment plan that would include stopping your use of marijuana.
