As a coach and a dad, Mark Knochel (kah NOCK ull) loves playing sports with his kids, except during allergy season.
Basically, like a scratchy throat, runny nose, teary eyes, things like that, just itchy from here to down here.
So when he heard about a study that could ease his allergies without shots, he was game.
Sublingual immunotherapy is basically taking that same allergenic chemical or extract and instead of having the dose via a shot, you actually dose, in this case, sublingually, which is under the tongue in a drop form.
The blood vessels under the tongue quickly absorb the allergen extract.
You don't really want to swallow it because what you're allergic to is typically a protein product and it will be dissolved in your digestive enzymes, so that's why it's not a pill that you swallow.
In this ragweed study, a-third received low dose drops, a-third got high dose drops, and a-third received no-dose, or placebo drops.
And basically, we saw an improvement in the symptoms of allergies due to ragweed in both treatment groups, both the low dose as well as the high dose.
If this type of therapy is approved, Doctor Gentile (JENN tile) says patients could self-treat at home leading up to and during allergy seasons.
Now if you're interested in getting long-term remission, or you know, a cure of your symptoms, you're most likely going to need to treat year-round with it for three to five years, just like the shots.
