Breathing hasn't always been easy for Laura Ballesteros (BY-ah-stare-ohs).
I was diagnosed with asthma at the age of three.
Laura's been tied to breathing machines her entire life, but she never let it stop her.
I mean it set me back at times but I've always been athletic so I've been able to overcome it.
Keep on blowing, keep on blowing.
Laura, and thousands others, have doed their DNA to a study designed to find the genes that cause the disease.
We have probably over 6,000 samples in our refrigerators to and freezers that we are working with.
Asthma specialists at the University of Arizona's Bio-5 (Bio five) Institute are using cutting edge technologies, originally developed for studying rice growth.
We're using the knowledge they have developed to understand different types of rice. To understand different types of people who have asthma.
The ultimate goal is to use the information found in the DNA to tailor better individualized treatments for asthma patients.
We're gonna be able to tell people what the risk is and therefore to guide doctors and practitioners and patients as to what is it that they have to do to prevent the disease.
It's this type of personal medicine that will make treating asthma more efficient.
It would be great because if they knew exactly what my body needs I wouldn't have to use my inhaler more than once I could just take what I need.
A new approach that could have all asthmatics breathing easier. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
