Jack Williamson has been dealing with asthma for a long time.
I think he was probably about two when the pediatrician finally said, hey, this is what we're dealing with.
Jack's mom, Sarah, notices when he gets a cold, it makes breathing even harder for him.
When they get anything, it magnifies as a result of their bronchial issues.
It's been known that the common cold aggravates asthma, but recently a new strain of the human rhinovirus has attracted attention.
Historically the hundred rhinovirus serotypes have been classified as group A or B, and now we found this new group C that seems to be pretty important.
Vanderbilt researchers conducted a study looking for cold virus clues among sick kids.
We studied children under the age of five who were hospitalized with breathing problems or fever, and we found a large portion of rhinoviruses in this population.
Nasal samples were tested to single out the type of rhinovirus the children had.
In our study, children who had an underlying diagnosis of asthma were a lot more likely to have this new group of rhinoviruses, HRVC, than those who did not.
Because HRVC was so prevalent with those kids, this new cold virus may help focus asthma research.
So we think that this new group of, of the common cold virus may be an important target for asthma prevention and treatment measures.
