Ahhh … Everybody loves the smell of a clean baby!

Once your baby's umbilical cord has fallen off and the circumcision site (if they're a boy) and navel have healed, it will be time for your baby's first bath. Washing a soapy, slippery baby isn't easy. You'll need the right gear to make bath time safe and hassle-free.

Your baby won't need a bath every day. Two or three times a week is enough. In between baths, you can use a washcloth to clean your baby's face, ears, and bottom.

Include these items on your baby bath-time shopping list.

  • Infant bathtub
  • Foam pad tub insert
  • Gentle, unscented baby soap
  • Unscented moisturizer
  • Tear-free shampoo
  • 4 to 6 cotton washcloths
  • 4 terry cloth bath towels
  • Hooded towel
  • Soft hair brush
  • Comb
  • Rinsing cup

In an ideal world, bath time will be followed by sleep time. You have quite a few options for creating a safe and comfy sleep space for your baby. When you have a newborn, easy cleanup is key. Layer these bedtime basics on top of your baby’s crib mattress:

  • Waterproof mattress pad (have 2-4)
  • Quilted mattress pad
  • Fitted crib sheet (have at least 2)
  • Waterproof sheet savers with ties or snaps (have 2-4)

If your baby makes a mess in the night, you can quickly and easily replace the sheet saver.

Notice what items are not on this list. You don't need bumper guards, blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals in your baby's bed. They are dangerous because they increase the risk of suffocation.

Dress your baby warmly enough in a snug, swaddle-type blanket so they don’t need to be covered.
