About two weeks after Susanna Tarokh (tah-roke) found out she was pregnant, she lost her appetite. Morning sickness took its place.
I didn’t really know what to do about it because I knew I needed to eat and people kept saying you have to eat, you have to eat, Which is kind of counterintuitive when you’re not feeling well. You don’t want to eat anything.
The sudden hormonal changes in early pregnancy are often blamed for the nausea and vomiting. But not eating can make it worse.
Frequently, the nausea really is an indicator from your body saying, I need more energy. I need more energy. I need more food. You haven’t fed me lately.
So what do you do if food makes you sick?
One of the best things to do is frequent, small meals.
A few crackers first thing in the morning can provide fuel and calm queasiness.
Some people find that ginger, ginger ale, ginger teas may actually help soothe their stomach.
Avoid spicy, greasy or fatty foods – and those with a strong smell. If your prenatal vitamin makes you sick, try taking it at night.
There have been a number of different advances actually, in the prenatal vitamin world. In terms of chewable prenatal vitamins and coated vitamins that, you know, Have kind of less of the smell and taste of your standard vitamin.
The good news is morning sickness doesn't harm the growing fetus. And symptoms typically go away by the fourth month.
Everybody had their fingers crossed that I would snap out of it, so I’m glad that it passed.
Now Susanna can get down to more pleasant business - preparing for her new baby's homecoming. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
