A roadside bomb in Iraq changed the course of Eric Jordan's life forever.
When the explosion went off, the truck went in the air, threw Eric out of the truck and when the truck came down it rolled across his back and broke his back.
Eric wasn't expected to live.
And if he did, he would never, because of the head trauma, that he would never respond, wouldn't be able to answer, wouldn't know who I was.
Eric survived and spent several months being treated at Walter Reed and then at his local VA Medical Center in Florida. He was discharged after his in-patient rehab was ruled complete.
I sat at home for about 2 years, not doing therapy, just kind of sitting at home all by myself.
His mom knew he needed more help and fought to get it. Through her persistence, Eric is the first soldier to get the VA to pay for outpatient rehab here at Shepherd Center in Atlanta.
They have given me my son back.
In fact, Eric was walking, with assistance, in just three months. Now he's paving the way for others to get outpatient support like this.
They're recognizing that our patients, that our veterans need continued services and I think, they're beginning to recognize the longevity of a catastrophic injury, that it just doesn't happen and you're over with it.
Therapists credit Eric's training as a soldier for his fight now. A fight he's turned into a personal battle he's winning at home. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
