Depression can be debilitating. Depression drugs can be too. Doctor Drew Pinsky, better known as MTV's Doctor Drew, is also a spokesperson for the national DMDA. He says the drugs don't have to be a downer.
People aren't anticipating complete control of their symptoms. People should understand that they should expect complete symptom control minus side effects. So not having to tolerate unpleasant side effects is a key to complete control.
After being diagnosed with depression, clinical psychologist Martha Manning had a hard time coping with the drugs she had to take.
The ironic part of it was when depression lifts you start to feel more attached and closer and back in touch with the people you love. The problem was that I also was feeling like I was becoming a sexual automaton.
Martha says her loss of libido, coupled with weight gain, made it impossible to feel like she had really beaten her depression. But Doctor Pinsky says if you can muster the courage to talk openly with your doctor about those private matters, you can find a drug that works better for you.
I got another antidepressant added that seemed to offset some of the difficulties. But I have to tell you, it is still a struggle. I am not back to where I was.
But with an open mind and open lines of communication with her doctor, it's a struggle she hopes to overcome. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
