For as long as she can remember, Marcy Negri was worried about *everything*.
It would be just like a switch that's broken in my head that I couldn't shut off. I would obsess and obsess.
She was especially afraid to travel or go out on her husband's boat and that put a strain on their relationship.
I wasn't happy. I didn't want to do a lot of things that I saw other people doing, friends travelling, going on boats not having fears, sleeping like a normal person at night.
Doctor Shelley Fox Aarons diagnosed Marcy with generalized anxiety disorder or G-A-D... A condition she says is often overlooked.
Because a lot of people don't realize that it is an anxiety disorder, they just think oh that's just me - I've always been that way and they don't realize that they could improve their quality of life by, you know, seeing somebody and getting treated.
Doctor Aarons says drugs like lexapro (LEX-uh-pro) and effexor (eh-FEX-or) work well.
In the old days the medicines we had the side effects were almost as bad as the symptoms but now a lot of people can feel completely comfortable on these medications with minimal side effects and get a really really good result.
Now treatment keeps Marcy's worries parked at the dock.
Helping the thoughts come into my head and leave quickly has been wonderful.
And a wonderful way to enjoy life again. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte
