Brittney Olberding (OLE ber ding) always wanted to work in medicine…but she didn't expect to be the patient.
I was a 4th year nursing student when this happened, so I don't have a bachelor's now. I was really, really close to getting my bachelor's so I need to go back to school soon, someday.
Brittney suffered a near-fatal brain injury in a car crash, and has been in rehab ever since.
I had to learn how to walk, how to read, how to eat, how to breathe, how to, like, clean, how to live, how to, everything.
To rebuild her skills, Brittney spends up to 6-hours a day at Scripps Memorial Hospital's brain injury rehab program. It's intensive therapy that helps return patients to daily life.
We treat patients one-on-one, whether it be with P.T., O.T., or speech, and then we also do integrated approaches where we kinda work together.
Since Brittney wants to return to school, she works on multi-tasking drills, like sorting cards and spelling un-related words.
R-O-O-M. Room.
She's making strides when it comes to walking… and even running.
We often start from a wheelchair level and just help people to the point where you've seen with Brittney, that now she's running.
While Brittney still has work ahead of her, she's determined to move forward.
I still have lot I'm going to do to accept my limitations, but just, it takes awhile.
Time she will use creating a new path in life. For WebMD, I'm Sandee Lamotte.
