These doctors and nurses are part of a special team devoted to helping people with brain injuries. Doctor Javier Cardenas (car-dayn-ahs) is the director.

Early intervention, early education, early evaluation are critical components of taking care of somebody suffering from a brain injury.

Javier Cardenas, M.D.:

How are you doing? Good.

Narrator:

The Brains Clinic shines by having ten specialties in one place.

By physically being in the same place, we communicate with each other on what the child’s needs are from each of our different perspectives.

Narrator:

Typically, when someone suffers a concussion, they'll see their doctor and go home without good follow-up. This can be detrimental, especially for children.

Javier Cardenas, M.D.:

Often times a child will suffer a concussion and look just like you or I and it may not be apparent. And then they go to school and they have trouble with memory. They have trouble with sitting still.

Narrator:

So the Brains Clinic does something unique, it provides educational specialists for kids and their parents.

Laura Villar:

She's been working directly with his teachers to get um him so they get a better understanding of traumatic brain injury.

Narrator:

Laura's 13-year-old son, Henry, suffered a t-b-i when he crashed his bicycle and wasn't wearing a helmet. The clinic has made a huge difference.

Henry Ferland:

They are helping me a lot because, I wouldn't even be here now if it wasn't for them.

Laura Villar:

He has come back full circle, um, he's, he's my boy again.
