An autoimmune disease nearly killed Doctor Marty Glasser.
Gradually, I became weaker. I had more difficulty walking and I especially noticed difficulty in breathing.
He has Myasthenia Gravis (my ass THHEE nee uh GRAV iss). It's an autoimmune disease that interrupts commands to the muscles. In Marty's case, it affected his diaphragm.
So he was basically shutting down slowly, feeling like he was dying in his own body, the way I see it.
Doctor Ewa (AA vuh) Carrier (CARRY er) is a transplant expert. She's investigating the use of stem blood cells for disorders like myasthenia gravis.
What we are doing is not, in fact, cure. What we are doing is so-called immune re-set.
To do that, millions of primitive stem cells were harvested from Marty's blood. After destroying his immune system with chemotherapy, the cells were re-infused.
They will migrate to the bone marrow and graft and then they will create in his body a new immune system that is presumably non-sensitized.
Earlier studies found this treatment can keep the disorder in check… but again, it's not a cure.
We have no idea when this disease will recur. I think it will, but we don't know when.
These days Marty's doing well, but acutely aware of the situations that triggered his disease before.
This time around I'm trying very, very carefully to balance the work effort, my relaxation, my stress and work out a balance that will keep the disease in check.
Helping him manage the disease that once controlled his life. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
