Narrator:

Andy Byrd (BIRD) on the farm is a long way from Andy at the bottom of a lake - where he nearly died a couple of dozen years ago.

Andy Byrd, Accidental Farmer:

I knew I had broke my neck because I couldn't move anything.

Narrator:

He was pulled to safety, but life as he knew it changed forever. Doctors told the outdoors man he'd only be able to move his eyes.

Andy Byrd, Accidental Farmer:

I just got it in my head that I'm gonna show em that's not true.

Narrator:

Before long, he could move his arms and it was full steam ahead, despite his paralysis. Then - he bought the farm - literally.

Andy Byrd, Accidental Farmer:

We found these blueberries and I told Hilda, I said there's no way we can eat all these and so what, so what I think I'm gonna do get a sign put out in front of the road, a 'pick your own.

Narrator:

It was the start of what's now a thriving organic farming business. Andy got a hand from agrability (AG-ruh-BIL-uh-tee), a U-S department of agriculture program for farm workers with disabilities. They helped him make his farm more accessible to accommodate his physical limitations.

Brock Bowman, MD, Assoc. Medical Director, Shepherd Center:

The obstacles were huge in the sense that he's in a wheelchair and power wheelchair and half the time you can't even get power wheelchairs around the farm just because of the terrain and yet, this is something he's interested in.

Narrator:

It may be a tough row to hoe, but Andy says anything's possible.

Andy Byrd, Accidental Farmer:

When I was laying on the bottom of the lake, it come to me things are going to be different, but there's going to be a challenge for you that I've got for you.

Narrator:
