    What Is Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer?

    Chemotherapy is a chemical, or group of chemicals, designed to stop the growth of cancer cells. Chemotherapy drugs may be given intravenously, orally, or as a combination of the two. There are many chemotherapy drugs used to treat breast cancer. When breast cancer is limited to the breast or lymph nodes, chemotherapy may be given after a lumpectomy or mastectomy.     Late Stage Breast Cancer (Stage III and Stage IV)

    Treatment of late stage breast cancer (stage III and stage IV) may include the following:

    • Radiation therapy.
    • Chemotherapy.

    Radiation therapy and chemotherapy should not be given during the first 3 months of pregnancy.
