Meelin (me-lynn) Nakata (na-cotta) was 44 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
I did a regular self breast exam and found a lump, and then had it checked out with my doctor. And as it turns out, it was mammogram occult, which means that no matter what you do, you won't be able to see it on a mammogram.
A biopsy and M-R-I confirmed the cancer cells, but Meelin had a severe reaction to the contrast dye in the M-R-I. Now cancer free - she needed a different tool for future monitoring. And The Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging, or B-S-G-I, turned out to be that better option.
It detects cells and tissues that are much more metabolically active than normal surrounding tissues. And that's what we exploit in terms of being able to see the tumors.
Doctor Bruce Porter is a Diagnostic Radiologist.
Cancers, in order to hurt somebody, to invade or metastasize, have very high energy needs.
In these B-S-G-I images, you can see a healthy breast on the left side of the screen and cancerous tumors that are metabolically active, lighting up red on the right.
For a mammogram you have to put compression on the breast.
BSGI is more comfortable, requiring less pressure.
They put your breasts between two panels but they're not squished. I mean, so in terms of pain level, it's just minimal, if at all any.
In the future, B-S-G-I may help evaluate patients who are breast cancer gene carriers. It may also provide an alternative to biopsies. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
