Al Ford is an avid fisherman, but fatigue was taking the fun out of it. The cause was serious.
They found a tumor and I went back to the neurosurgeon, Doctor Singh, and he said from looking at x-rays of it, it was too large to dissolve it via medication so it would have to be a surgery removal.
Al's tumor was on his pituitary gland. He agreed to a new, endoscopic surgery to remove it. Using tiny tools, doctors were able to travel to his brain through his nose.
What's so nice about this procedure is that now with new technologies that we have and the new equipment we have, we're able to provide an alternative procedure to what was a traditional done.
Endoscopic brain surgery is being embraced by surgeons throughout the country... But it takes teamwork.
I'm the expert when it comes to the nose and sinuses and so I get them where they need to go and after I get them there then the neurosurgeons take over and starts working in the brain area.
This minimally invasive approach means a faster recovery with less scarring.
It just seemed easy and more convenient and I don't know a little more modern then to do it that way.
The entire tumor on Al's pituitary gland was removed. His energy is back… and he's back at his favorite fishing hole. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
