General Information About Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the cervix. The cervix is the lower, narrow end of the uterus (the hollow, pear-shaped organ where a fetus grows). Treatment of carcinoma in situ (stage 0) may include the following:

  • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP).
  • Laser surgery.
  • Conization.
  • Cryosurgery.
  • Total hysterectomy for women who cannot or no longer want to have children.
  • Internal radiation therapy for women who cannot have surgery.

  • Radical hysterectomy and removal of lymph nodes followed by radiation therapy plus chemotherapy.
  • Radiation therapy plus chemotherapy.
