General Discussion
Non-Hodgkins Type Gastric Lymphoma is a rare form of stomach cancer characterized by unrestrained growth of certain lymphoid cells of the stomach. This form of cancer is thought to arise from certain white blood cells (lymphocytes) within lymphoid tissue of the stomach's mucous membrane (mucosa). Non-Hodgkins Type Gastric Lymphoma may be a primary disease process (primary lymphoma) or may develop due to another underlying lymphoma. Symptoms and findings associated with Non-Hodgkins Type Gastric Lymphoma may include pain, bleeding, obstruction of, and/or the development of a hole in the wall of the stomach (perforation). In many affected individuals, an abnormal mass may be felt (palpable) in the upper middle (epigastric) region of the abdomen. Non-Hodgkins Type Gastric Lymphoma affects males more often than females and usually appears to occur during middle age. According to the medical literature, Non-Hodgkins Type Gastric Lymphoma tends to occur an average of approximately 10 years earlier than gastric adenocarcinoma, a more common form of stomach cancer.
