So how are you doing? Good! Do you mind if I test your reflexes? Sure!
Nine-year-old Samantha Gadomski (guh DOMM skee) has quick reflexes. A good sign just a few months after surgery to remove a brain tumor.
They didn't want it to grow bigger. So needless to say, we had surgery within six days of finding out that she had a tumor.
To help find it all, Samantha's tumor was illumied by an investigational dye called 5-ALA.
Our body already has 5-ALA, as we call it, in it. We're just providing an additional amount that we, fortuitously, some malignant tumors take up in excess.
Patients drink the dye a few hours before surgery, giving the tumor time to absorb it.
We try to time our surgery where we would be in the midst of the, when we really need it, about six hours from the time of ingestion.
When exposed to blue-violet light, the dye glows, alerting doctors to rogue tissue that needs to come out.
Lo and behold, there are some areas that are glowing sometimes, and that, and that leads for more aggressive resection.
In Samantha's case, it helped find a hidden piece of the tumor.
I fluoresced the tumor bed and there was a charcoal glowing in the corner. And I biopsied that, sent it to pathology, and sure enough, it was a malignant tumor.
Because healthy brain tissue wasn't harmed, Samantha's still able to handle the demands of fourth grade.
Very hard and a lot of homework.
Helping Samantha and her family take the next steps in her recovery. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
