A few years ago, Carolyn Smith faced breast cancer, the same disease that took her sister.
When I… found out, it was like my whole world just turned upside down.
The diagnosis, and confusion about treatment, filled Carolyn with fear and anger.
You don't know who to believe, who to trust. And I went home and I just sobbed all night.
To help Carolyn and patients like her, hospitals are offering specialists called nurse navigators.
Often times we are called by nursing staff or medical staff for a particular patient because they're either struggling with a new diagnosis, or a new diagnosis is pending.
Patricia Quinn-Casper says nurse navigators are both a sounding board as well as an information source.
We try and meet the patients during that diagnostic work-up so we can start explaining, putting some concepts into place that they can understand.
Through it all, nurse navigators are companions on a difficult journey.
I can get them through the walk when it's treacherous, but I really can't change that walk.
For Carolyn, Pat's care made it possible for her to move forward through her treatments.
She said everything that I needed to hear that nobody else was saying.
And helped Carolyn navigate her way to a cancer-free future. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
