Why do cold symptoms worsen as the day wears on?

General Medicine, WebMD Medical Expert

It's an interesting question, isn't it? Though having a cold certainly is never any fun!

I've also noticed that the severity of cold symptoms tend to fluctuate throughout the course of the day -- and that's without using any over-the-counter cold remedies.

If you're taking something for your cold, you might be noticing that the effectiveness of medications tends to peak at a certain point and then taper off.

Otherwise, I don't think we have a good medical answer for this phenomenon. I believe our body's natural circadian rhythms probably have something to do with it. Just as our temperature varies throughout the day, so may our body's effectiveness in fighting the cold virus.

Now if only someone would finally find a cure for it, right?
