Here's a bold statement. The contents of this vial might, one day, help prevent colon cancer.
What this research is playing on is the notion of can we use our own immune system as a means of fighting a foreign invader, in this case, the invader cancer.
Jeff Wagner's history of pre-cancerous polyps made him the perfect candidate for the vaccine study.
It's a series of shots that you have to receive.
The shots target changes in a mucin (MUSE-in) protein called muck 1.
The vast majority of cancers have changes in these mucins.
The vaccine is designed to ramp up the immune system to recognize this abnormal muck 1, and stage an attack, hopefully preventing it from evolving into cancer.
Treating cancer is not, not fun. I'd much prefer the best cancer is the cancer you don't get. And uh also, it's nice that we're trying to harness the body's immune system. I think anytime you're trying to use your own defenses that's a very exciting approach.
For Jeff, it's a case of so far, so good.
After my last colonoscopy that I'd gotten changed into a 5-year return visit. So I went from one to two to five. So, I'm doing better for some reason.
The study is still recruiting, but Jeff's happy to be at the head of the pack. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
