In this lab at the University of Arizona, Doctor Eugene Gerner (GER-ner) and his team are waging a war against colon cancer.
Our long term goal is to develop drugs that people can take to prevent colon cancer.
Doctor Gerner conducted clinical trials on people who had colon polyps, often a precursor to colon cancer. Gerald Gilbert was one of the patients.
I felt it was a worthwhile study to be involved in.
Gerald and the other participants were given a combination of two drugs: sulindac (sul-IN-dak), used for inflammation and D-F-M-O, which inhibits cell growth. The results were surprising even to Doctor Gerner.
Our treatment reduced those risky polyp recurrences by over 95%.
According to Doctor Gerner, the most effective current way to prevent colon cancer is to take out precancerous polyps, usually during a colonoscopy. But that has limits.
They recur, they recur with time and so part of what we're trying to do is to develop strategies that can be used in people who've had these risky polyps.
The trial medications are working for Gerald.
I had a couple of other colonoscopies during the course of the study and they were all clean.
Our goal is to bring things forward that will be beneficial to a large number of people in the U.S. for indications such as colon cancer prevention and actually the prevention of other types of cancers.
A goal that Gerald and others at risk for colon cancer can celebrate. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
