Stomach Cancer (Gastric Cancer)
Day One If you're in shock over your diagnosis of stomach cancer, it's understandable. If you're feeling fear, anger, sadness, confusion, all these feelings are entirely natural. But with a diagnosis of stomach cancer, you don't want to go into denial over your illness. You must try to take a step back from your emotions -- to learn more about this disease and figure out a plan of action. We've compiled information to help you do that. You might ask a family member or other trusted person to also read it. This will help you process and talk about it. Then, talk to your doctor about all you've learned. Don't hesitate to ask any question -- no question is unimportant when it comes to your health. Doctors now use many medical advances that can improve your odds over stomach cancer, such as chemotherapy, radiation and novel types of surgery. Biological therapy (also called immunotherapy) can help boost your body's recovery after treatment by programming the body's own immune system to attack cancer cells, leaving healthy cells unharmed. Your stomach cancer treatment team will include many specialists -- gastroenterologists, surgeons, radiation and chemotherapy oncologists, and a rehabilitation team. These specialists will work together to make sure you get the best treatment. You will also have access to clergy, social workers, legal counsel and support groups to help you along the way. When you have concerns, share them with this health care team. They're here for you and your family. Right now, your own health and spirit are most important. Laugh when you want to. Pray when you need to. Keep hope and faith alive. Yours in health, Medically reviewed by Cynthia Haines, MD, February 11, 2005.
