April 10, 2002 -- This is no meatloaf-and-mashed potatoes story. This is about getting actual symptom relief -- true comfort -- either from eating certain foods or by avoiding others altogether. This is a story about food and hot flashes, heartburn, and an irritating problem called irritable bowel syndrome.
"In many cases, you can control your symptoms with diet instead of medications," says Elaine Magee, MPH, RD, a dietitian known as "The Recipe Doctor." She's also author of a new book series, Tell Me What to Eat, that addresses these issues.
"Even if you take medications, eating a certain way can still help you -- either allowing you to lower the dose of medication, which is always good, or working with the medications to increase your comfort," she tells WebMD. Page: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 Next: Comfort Foods Offer Symptom Relief
