This government agency provides fact sheets, brochures, proceedings of conferences, videotaped lectures on topics concerning nutrition and weight-control, as well as WIN Notes, a quarterly newsletter for health professionals (this often contains useful medical news for the layperson). They can also steer you toward one of dozens of University-based weight-control programs.

Shape Up America! was founded by former U.S. Surgeon-General C. Everett Koop. Its purpose is to educate the public on the importance of the achievement and maintenance of a healthy body weight through the adoption of increased physical activity and healthy eating. To this end, their web site provides some very interesting and helpful features, such as a "Cyberkitchen" that can help you devise healthy meal plans, a Health & Fitness Center that can help you assess your fitness level (as well as teach you about different kinds of healthy activities), and a Support Center message board.

Overeaters Anonymous is a fellowship based on a 12-step program (like that of Alcoholics Anonymous). Their goal is to help each other understand and overcome compulsive eating disorders. Overeaters Anonymous publishes a monthly magazine, Lifeline, which is available by subscription (for a donation) both in print and on the Web. They also have local support groups all over the country.

TOPS is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to helping people "take off pounds sensibly." They have weekly meetings in local areas all over the country, a monthly magazine, as well as weekend retreats. Annual dues are $20.
