Simple Changes, Big Weight Loss
WebMD's Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD   Kathleen M. Zelman is director of nutrition for the WebMD Weight Loss Clinic.
All kinds of diets ask you to give up certain foods or eat ridiculous quantities of questionable foods (cabbage soup, high-fat meat, butter, bacon). Not only are these diets unrealistic and impossible to follow, but once you go off them, the pounds return and you are right back where you started.

Don't give those pounds a round-trip ticket back; take them off once and for all. Learn to make small changes that become a permanent part of your lifestyle.

A few ideas for healthier behaviors:

  • Use milk instead of cream in your coffee.
  • Park your car on the edge of the parking lot (less likely to get dings).
  • Order grilled instead of fried foods.
  • Satisfy your sweet tooth with fresh fruit or suck on a piece of hard candy.
  • Do 100 sit ups before going to bed.
  • Eat whole fruit instead of drinking juice.
  • Use lemon instead of butter or margarine on vegetables.
  • Enjoy a small portion of baked chips on occasion.
