Question:

Sometimes I feel anxious around people, maybe even a little claustrophobic. I feel like the room gets hot. It especially happens around people I'm not familiar with. What can I do to prevent this?

Answer:

The most common cause of this type of social uneasiness is a feeling of either not fitting in or being unable to communicate adequately with someone in the group. You can do it, and you'll gradually learn to feel comfortable if you do two things.

First, learn to use relaxation breathing before you go into these situations. Second, use positive self-talk throughout the experience. Tell yourself, "It's OK, I'm fine and I can enjoy this situation. Just do it and everything will be fine." Find someone to whom you can talk, share something you have in common, or just ask a simple question.

Make this the year you begin to really be in charge of your life.
