My sister Kathy is now on the weight loss surgery bandwagon. When our friend Missi had surgery, Kathy supported her fully though the entire experience. She accompanied Missi to her doctor's visits, the nutritional training, and pre-op testing. All the while Kathy was opposed to Missi having the surgery. Even after the surgery, Kathy was convinced that it was a mistake. But now that it's been a while, and Kathy has seen the positive effect of weight loss on Missi's life, Kathy has become a convert. Struggling through the preoperative process has been hard on Kathy. I'm watching her suffer through emotional turmoil as she passes each hurdle along the way. Anyone who thinks surgery is an easy answer has no idea what they're talking about. This is a complex and lengthy process. Anyone who isn't dedicated to their own health will most likely just give up. Most weight loss surgery patients take about a year from the beginning of their journey through the actual surgery and recovery. It's not a snap decision like getting a tattoo after a drunken binge that you wake up with (along with a hangover) and regret. I'm glad that Kathy is working on getting surgery approval and hope that one day I will be doing the same.
