Now that I've been added to Ed's medical insurance, it's time to get started on getting approved for surgery. It's a scary, yet exciting prospect. I am determined to make this happen. Observing Kathy's experience was good for me. I know how frustrating and complicated getting approval can be. There are so many steps to take; the psychological exam, getting a letter of recommendation from my primary care physician, and lots of tests. Waiting for approval can be frustrating because there's nothing the patient can do to hurry the process along, and it can take months from start to finish. This isn't the kind of decision that can or should be made without much thought. Gastric bypass surgery changes a person's life. The long, drawn-out approval process, while frustrating, helps to ensure that only the most dedicated patients end up on the operating table. A person who isn't willing to go through all of the steps to get the surgery probably isn't committed to the lifelong changes that are necessary for success. Today I'll begin searching the web for information on surgeons. Because we have TriCare, the medical insurance for military retirees, surgeon options are likely to be limited. There are no active military bases in our area, so there aren't many doctors who work with TriCare. Finding a qualified physician who accepts our medical insurance is the first big hurdle. It's really exciting to think that I'm going to have this surgery!
