Body Transformed
A Journey of Surgical Weight Loss

Different Food, Same Love
October 31, 2004

Halloween with no candy? Horrors!

In reality, it wasn't bad at all. Because people who have had gastric bypass surgery cannot tolerate sugar or fats, my diet has changed drastically since surgery just over three months ago. I never was a big candy eater, but give me cake, pie, or some other sinful dessert, and I could pack it away with the best of them. I can't imagine eating anything like that now.

Appetite and food tastes are funny things. They change over time. Kids love simple foods like macaroni and cheese. As we grow up, our palates become more sophisticated. We branch out, enjoying foods with complex flavors and textures. After gastric bypass surgery, I've become a much healthier eater.

I recently decided to skip taking the time to prepare something healthy for lunch. I sat down with the kids and ate three tater-tots and two chicken nuggets. Within 20 minutes of eating, I was miserable. Suffering through lower abdominal pains, stomachache, and lots of gas was enough to convince me that it's well worth taking the time necessary to toss together some greens and roasted chicken with cheese to make a healthy salad rather than grabbing the fast and easy stuff.

This month there are three birthdays in our family. At first it felt odd to not join the others as they ate birthday cake and ice cream, but as I sat there watching my happy family, I realized that it's not the food that makes the celebration, it's the people, and I'm darn lucky to be with them as we celebrate the life of each wonderfully valuable person seated around the table.
