The NIAID is one of the institutes in the National Institutes of Health, a division of the U.S. government. Its primary mission is to support and conduct research in allergic and infectious diseases as a means to determine methods for prevention, treatment, and management of the diseases. The NIAID looks at different aspects and disorders of the immune system and how these may deter or contribute to diseases of the immune system, including lupus, arthritis, and infections. The NIAID consists of many divisions that work on specific elements within the field of allergies and infectious diseases. Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America

This is a national, private, nonprofit organization that works to bring together the appropriate people and organizations to address health problems brought on by allergic diseases. The organization is made up of health professionals, scientists, and others in the healthcare field who are working to address health problems brought on by allergic diseases, including hay fever, asthma, allergic reactions to molds, animals, drugs, foods, and insect stings. They offer postdoctoral fellowships in immunology and asthma, as well as produce many patient education pamphlets and materials for health professionals.

This is an information and news service for patients and their families. This site is maintained by allergists, the medical specialists who treat allergies and asthma, and their professional association, the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. You will find a wide range of subjects here including information about the types of advice you can get from your allergist, news releases about allergy and asthma, and information on specific types of allergies such as food, pollen, or insect allergies. Use the "search this site" feature for quick results.

The Food Allergy Network (FAN) is a nonprofit organization established to help families living with food allergies and to increase public awareness about food allergies and anaphylaxis (a severe, life-threatening reaction). FAN provides education, emotional support, and coping strategies. It is a member-supported organization. The annual membership fee is $24 for individuals. A copy of The Food Allergy News, a bimonthly newsletter, is sent to all members. Members also receive special product alert notices informing them of product and labeling information.

This group offers information on residential air pollution (including pamphlets on secondhand smoke), "biologicals" (e.g. molds, bacteria, dust mites), organic gases (e.g. solvents, cleansers and disinfectants, dry-cleaning), asbestos, radon, etc. Their materials are available on the web site or by phone request.
Listservs
A listserv is a discussion of a particular topic, which may be mediated by a specific individual. Listservs are conducted entirely through email, although they may be archived in other parts of the Internet. When you subscribe you will receive a message that confirms your subscription. This message will also contain the information about how to unsubscribe -- this is vital, so store it in a good place on your mail server.
