Removing the Fat

As we age, the skin around the eyes stretches, muscles become weaker, and fat accumulates. Eyelid surgery removes fat, and sometimes skin and muscle, in an attempt to eliminate droopy upper lids and bags beneath eyes.

Making the Incisions

In a typical procedure, the surgeon makes incisions following the lines of the eyelids: the creases in the upper lids and below the lashes in the lower lids.

Through these incisions, the surgeon separates the skin from the underlying fat and muscle and then removes the excess fat. Often he'll then trim the muscle and sagging skin. The incisions are closed with very tiny sutures.

A New Technique

If you have fat pockets below your eyelids, but dont need to have any skin removed, your surgeon can perform whats called a transconjunctival eyelid lift. This procedure involves cutting the eyelid from the inside rather than the outside to remove fat deposits, and doesn't leave any visible scars.
