Can exercise help treat depression?

Answer by:
WebMD Expert

Absolutely.  When treating anyone who has clinical depression, an important thing that should be done is to put the person on an exercise program. We often recommend medications for severe depression, but exercise can be highly beneficial for mild to moderate depression.

The  use of exercise alone for depression is less likely to be helpful in more severe cases. But it should be part of a complete treatment plan.
