Is This Depression?
Depression isn't just about being sad. A counselor can help you sort it out.
Question:
I guess I need to know if I am depressed or not. Since my second child was born, I have been having a hard time dealing with things. I get easily annoyed and can't stand being interrupted. I get really upset and stressed out when the children fight. I am an emotional eater -- I've gained about 60 pounds over the past two years. I binge on chocolate bars quite often, and if my husband buys beer I can't wait to break into one. I know a couple of beers in the evening sure are welcoming sometimes.

My doctor referred me to a mental health counselor because I am so overwhelmed lately. I have seen her a few times. I just saw my doctor the other day, and he asked me if I needed an antidepressant. I told him I was scared to go that route. He said he'll check with me in a month to see how I feel then.

I'm not sure what to think. I feel unhappy with everything and have low self-esteem. I feel I lack support from my family and my husband. I have few friends. I feel alone, I guess. Can anyone shed some light?
Answer:
There does seem to be lots going on with you. It's hard to have your own life when you have little ones depending on you! I hope you will stay with your counselor because you will have an opportunity to sort all this out. I doubt that you began feeling this way over a couple of days, so as you may guess, it will take awhile for you to get better.
Your therapist and you can discuss the medication option. One word of advice, though, is to drink alcohol only occasionally as this will only make your symptoms worse.
