Fiber for Heart Health: Eating Healthier

Although the benefits of fiber for heart health are real, experts warn that you shouldn't be so focused on the fiber that you ignore other aspects of a healthy diet.

"We try to get people to think about improving their diet as a whole instead of zeroing in on a couple of specific components of foods," Lichtenstein tells WebMD. "That can lead them in the wrong direction."

The key to getting enough fiber for heart health probably isn't in devouring a box of high-fiber crackers. Eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will most likely give you enough fiber naturally. What’s more, you'll get lots of vitamins, minerals, and healthy plant chemicals that can also boost health -- maybe in ways we still don't understand.
