Nationally-known nutrition expert, Madelyn Fernstrom, is right at home here at her neighborhood farm stand. We asked her to take us shopping.
Coming in to a market, look for color. Think of red fruits and vegetables, tomatoes, watermelons, strawberries and red peppers just to name a few. Then you want to think ok, what about some green? Any kind of green leafy lettuce, the darker, the better.
So what if you like fruit and not veggies? Or vice versa? Is one better than the other?
We always hear five fruits and vegetables a day. Now, some people don't like one or the other. It's perfectly fine to have all fruits or all vegetables. If you do take all of one category, you want to have a mixture of color, 'cause that's gonna get you the widest variety of nutrients.
There's a sneaky way to get those nutrients, mix and match.
Take some of your old favorites and add something new. For a salad, maybe add a different kind of green or a new vegetable. For a fruit salad, add something maybe more exotic like a kiwi or a mango for a little change.
You don't have to shop at the farmer's market. The grocery store is just fine.
When you go to the grocery store and look for fruits and vegetables, think local and seasonal. Because they're gonna be the best calorie bargain and the best, best savings for your wallet.
