Dr. William Frumkin’s weight was always going up and down, but no matter what he did, he could never keep it off. At six-foot-three and 433 pounds, he realized his weight was out-of-control.
Around my 40th birthday, I decided that I really need to do something because otherwise I’m not gonna make it to 50.
So the doctor became a patient, turning to his colleague Dr. Mitchell Roslin for laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery. It's an operation that creates a smaller stomach and re-arranges the small intestine. Combined with diet and exercise, it produces dramatic weight loss.
He understands risk and benefit and he realized that his only alternative was bariatric surgery.
As a physician, Doctor Frumkin had access to every type of treatment and medication and was well aware of the risks of obesity surgery.
But you have to always remember that there’s a risk to not doing it and the risks to not doing it is probably a lot higher than you’re giving it credit for.
What’s clouding the facts is people’s perception about obesity as a whole. They don’t wanna confront the fact that it’s a deadly terminal disease.
Today the heart specialist is almost 200-pounds lighter and healthier than he was two years ago.
You know you keep promising yourself, tomorrow morning I’m gonna wake up and just change my life and this really does change your life. It’s amazing.
Choosing surgery for some, may be their last best hope. For WebMD, I’m Damon Meharg.
