If a picture's worth a thousand words, you know just what these kids are thinking. Yuck! Often, we learn to tolerate, or even love, certain things. But when it comes to the herb, cilantro, it's either love or hate!
My facial expression really, I think, describes how it's, how it's affecting me, 'cause it's really, it's really unpleasant.
Marilyn Drukin has never liked cilantro. In fact, she despises it.
To me it tastes like soap, nasty soap. And it's, it's extremely unpleasant.
Yes, she said soap! And even more puzzling, this isn't a matter of taste.
It's a confusion. It's not a taste of soap, it's, it's really the smell of soap.
When we eat, receptors in the nose pick up chemical compounds that are translated into the taste experience.
And it's then the sense of smell, olfaction, that we then have the full experience, and for those unfortunate people who hate cilantro, the evil odor of soap.
To test the smell theory, Monell researchers asked twins to sniff cilantro. Among identical twins, the high degree of agreement sealed the genetic link. That means if it tastes like soap, you aren't crazy!
They may not be getting the very strong component that is masking, if you will, the soapy odor. And for them, the evil soapy odor pops out.
A genetic gotcha that creates the great cilantro divide! For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
