Twenty-nine-year-old Chris Trujillo (tru-HE-yoh) used to work so much, all he did was eat and sleep. His weight was yo-yo-ing out of control.
I had one box of big clothes and one box of small clothes, so this is crazy.
Chris knew how to eat healthy, but he'd continually eat way too much at one meal. He was diagnosed with binge eating disorder.
My problem is the relationship that I have with the food.
Scientists have been studying a newly discovered stomach hormone called ghrelin (GRELL–in) which increases appetite. It's thought blocking this hormone may help people lose weight. Doctor Allan Geliebter's (geh-LEEB-ter) most recent study measured ghrelin (GRELL –in) levels in binge eaters, like Chris.
Our expectation was that ghrelin would be higher, given that people with binge-disorder have a ravenous appetites and eat much too much at certain meals.
But they were wrong. The ghrelin in obese subjects was low and even lower in binge eaters.
What we still don't know is, is how important is the role of Ghrelin in everyday eating.
Doctor Geliebter says ghrelin is still an exciting find. It just may not be the cure everyone's looking for. For WebMD, I’m Sandee LaMotte.
