Twelve hours spent in the hospital ER convinced 47-year-old Michael Lawrence to get serious about his weight.
It was on my birthday too, as a matter of fact, and we were getting ready to go out to eat when all of a sudden my nose started to bleed. And it wasn't just a nose bleed. It was really, really bleeding.
For years, he'd lost and gained the same 20 to 35 pounds, but when his blood pressure went through the roof, he had to get the weight off for good.
And at that particular point, just lying there in bed, I said this will never ever happen to me again.
Doctor Robert Gotlin helped him figure out and work with his metabolic rate.
We all have different rates based upon our body size, our level of energy expenditure, what we do. And that level is the key point to know as far as keeping your weight where you want it to be.
When energy intake, or food, matches energy output, or exercise, your body is in balance. That's a steady state for weight maintenance or a weight loss plateau.
People don't understand their basic level of metabolism. And you have to know that if you're stuck and you can't lose more weight.
To overcome that, cut calories a little more or do more exercise.
See what your energy expenditure is, what you're burning up in exercise, look at your diet and see what you're taking in.

Understanding his metabolism got Michael's weight loss back on track.
Anytime I worked out and watched what I was eating, I always lost weight and very quickly too.
Now to stick to his routine, he remembers his birthday in the hospital.
I think about that and it just pushes me back to exercising and eating right.
It was the wake up call he needed to stay the course. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
