I enjoy fast food. I love Mickie D’s, I love Burger King, I think they taste great.
But Art Carey’s son, Ted, is a little pickier. He’s a vegetarian, making fast food a bit of a challenge.
We’ll find a place where there’ll be a couple of them along the road and stop at my place and then we’ll go down the street and he’ll get something.
Registered dietician Althea [al-THEE-uh] Zanecosky [zan-KAW-ski] says consumer demand for better vegetarian choices should mean less stops for Art and Ted.
In the past, a vegetarian would have to just pick small amounts of either side dishes of vegetables or side dishes of potatoes. Now specific entrees and the way that these items are prepared are much more geared towards vegetarians than ever before.
For example... Althea says this fruit and yogurt parfait is a great choice at McDonald’s. You could also ask for a burger or other item at any fast food chain and tell them to hold the beef. Ted says he does that at Taco Bell.
I go there and I order whatever I like, but then I just ask them to not put meat on it.
But Zanecosky says that means you’re missing essential nutrients.
I’m concerned when people take apart non-vegetarian foods, animal foods, and just pick out pieces of it.
We are concerned though about whether he’s getting sufficient protein. There are days when it seems like he exists on vapors.
Vegetarians need to do their homework. They need to know where important nutrients come from and what foods they come from.
If you do that homework, you should be able to find food on the go to satisfy both the carnivores and vegetarians in the family. For WebMD, I’m Sandee LaMotte.
